I belong to a textile artist group called Running Stitch and in September 2013 we held an exhibition at Solihull Arts Complex with the title Roots as our theme. I have a very keen interest in social history, particularly the everyday lives of women and their families during the last century. I chose therefore to look towards my own family roots and I have always been fascinated with old family photographs as they conjure up memories of times gone by, of people, places, holidays and events. They serve as a permanent reminder of who we are, where we come from, our family and friends and of people we don’t want to forget. Our photographs and our memories are our roots so I translated old photographs of me and my family when I was growing up into stitch embroidering the images onto vintage tray cloths in much the same way I used for The Hours quilt.
